Information to help LGBT caregivers connect to resources and support
By Douglas Flynn / October 16, 2017

This past Wednesday was the 29th annual National Coming Out Day celebrating people coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or as an ally.

BayPath Elder Services and Caregiving MetroWest partnered with Framingham State University to help mark the occasion with "Pride Across Generations," an intergenerational dinner at Framingham State's McCarthy Center. The night was a smashing success with over 80 people in attendance to hear an inspiring keynote speech by WBZ NewsRadio's Kristen Eck, an informative panel discussion with Brandon Adams (OUT MetroWest), Matthew Polimeno (Framingham State), Rev. Debbie Clark (Edwards Church, UCC) and Donald Gray (AGE MetroWest), and closing remarks from BayPath Executive Director Christine Alessandro.

By the LGBT community faces many issues that cannot be addressed in a single night. Those issues and concerns are compounded for the many members of that community who are also providing care to loved ones.

Caregiving MetroWest has a section on this website devoted to helping LGBT caregivers with information and resources on our LGBT Caregiving page in our Guide to Caregiving section.

That page also features links to other sites that can help support LGBT caregivers in their efforts. But we'd like to make special note of a new resource that could be particularly valuable.

AARP has recently released a 48-page handbook specifically designed for LGBT caregivers. "Prepare to Care: A Planning Guide for Caregivers in the LGBT Community" is accessible online in pdf form, and includes sections on making a plan, forming a team, finding support and caring for yourself among others.

In addition to our online resources and links, LGBT caregivers can also connect directly with our Caregiver Specialist Alicia Rego at 508-573-7239 or arego@baypath.org for any caregiving issues or support needs, as well as our new LGBTQ+ Initiative Coordinator Julie Nowak at 509-573-7365 or jnowak@baypath.org for any help in finding inclusive resources and information.
