BayPath Elder Services working to reach under-served community with its LGBT Initiative
By Douglas Flynn / February 23, 2018
BayPath Elder Services, Inc.’s mission is to be a trusted partner in providing an array of services and programs to older adults, caregivers and persons with disabilities to support their independence and dignity.

As part of that mission, BayPath strives to provide the very best information, resources and supports to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) older adults and their allies living in MetroWest.

LGBT seniors face the typical challenges of aging; however, because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity they are at higher risk for abuse, isolation, discrimination and exploitation.

Fearful of mistreatment, LGBT seniors are five times less likely to access services than non-LGBT seniors. Moreover, many of these LGBT seniors are estranged from their family of origin, and do not have children, so they are facing the challenges of aging without supports that many people take for granted.

In 2017, BayPath received a grant from the MetroWest Health Foundation to help build a sustainable relationship with the MetroWest LGBT older adult community in order to improve access to LGBT inclusive and informed health, mental health, and other information, resources, and services.

The resulting BayPath LGBT Initiative is now under way and seeks to provide outreach to LGBT older adults, families and caregivers, community agencies, allies, businesses and individuals in order to establish BayPath as an LGBT informed and inclusive place to find support, information and resources for health and well-being.

BayPath is developing a resource guide of LGBT inclusive resources (health care providers, vendors, community agencies and businesses) and contact information of local, state, and government agencies where LGBT elders can seek professional advice, obtain resources and build new relationships with health care, mental healthcare, and other professionals in MetroWest rather than having to go to Worcester or Boston to receive LGBT competent care.

The initiative will also train BayPath staff, local Councils on Aging, Senior Centers, and the wider community on LGBT older adult issues in order to improve LGBT competency.

BayPath's new LGBT Initiative has staff available to answer questions, provide information and referrals, and offer new programs and events to LGBT older adults, their family members, and local professionals in MetroWest.

BayPath LGBT Coordinator Julie Nowak and Elder Community Care Coordinator Cindy Getchell can be reached on a confidential phone line at 508-573-7288, or by email at lgbtinfo@baypath.org

You can also read more about BayPath's LGBT Initiative on the BayPath website and at its LGBT-focused Pathways of BayPath Facebook page.
