Share your sight by volunteering to help blind or visually impaired people in Massachusetts
By Douglas Flynn / September 28, 2018

The Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking volunteers to help blind or visually impaired individuals remain as independent as possible in their homes.

Volunteers provide confidential, reliable support that helps individuals with visual impairments lead the lives they want to live. Volunteers are matched one-to-one with clients and assist with tasks such as shopping, reading, clerical and leisure time pursuits.

Each volunteer is thoroughly interviewed, screened and trained. Volunteers read mail, magazines and paperwork; write letters and fill out forms; help with grocery shopping or errands; and, in Central Mass. only, provide transportation to doctors' appointments. Volunteers also walk, jog, run or exercise with clients in their fitness activities.

There are no special skills needed, though a six-month commitment is required. Volunteers can set up a flexible schedule, volunteering during the day, evening or weekend. Volunteers must be at least 18 or accompanied by an adult. Find out more about the Family Volunteer Program at the number below.

If you are not sure if this is the right kind of volunteering for you, attend a training, then decide.

The MABVI holds monthly trainings. For more information or to register, call 508-854-1733 , email nedmonds@mabcommunity.org or visit mabvi.org/volunteer. You can also call 508-854-0700 or 888-613-2777 in Central and Western Mass. and 617-972-9119 or 617-926-4312 in Eastern Mass.
