Advocates offering new option for caregivers with support groups by phone
Joining a support group can be an effective tool in learning to cope with the challenges that can come with caring for a loved one. In our Guide to Caregiving section, Diane McCauley, an experienced caregiver from Hopkinton, discussed the value of support groups and contributed some pointers on how to choose the right group to join.
But not all caregivers have the opportunity to get to regular meetings of a support group. It’s not always possible to find someone to look after the person you’re caring for to free up time to attend a meeting.
Advocates, a Framingham-based human services organization, has come up with a solution for area caregivers seeking support but unable to leave home for group meetings. With funding from the MetroWest Health Foundation and the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, Advocates is now offering a way for caregivers to participate in a support group by phone in the Advocates Caregiver Telephone Connections program.
The program is designed for caregivers of older adults who may not be able to get out to meet with a traditional support group on a regular basis, but still need the support and help a support group can offer. It focuses on problem solving, resources and self care.
Advocates recently concluded 12-week programs in both English and Spanish, and will hold less formal sessions throughout the summer. New full 12-week programs in English and Spanish will be offered in the fall.
Sessions are led by trained co-facilitators and registration required to participate.
